Dungeons & Dragons is an imagination-based game, after all, and there are no limits to what can be fused together to form something new. DMs, especially new ones, should feel free to use things like settings, history and story elements from other media and insert them into their own campaigns. While some may feel like it's cheating, taking inspiration from your favorite existing franchises like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones is perfectly fine and incredibly common.
